Indonesia was elected as the Chair of SSME
Indonesia's central and strategic role in the management of the Sulu-Sulawesi Sea marine eco region gained momentum with its election as the Chair of SSME for the 2011-2013 terms at the Sixth Tri-National Committee Meeting of the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Eco Region (TNC-SSME) which took place in Manila, the Philippines, from 26-27 July 2011.
The Sixth TNC-SSME was attended by delegates from three SSME member countries, namely Indonesia (represented by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of Forestry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), the Philippines (represented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources) and Malaysia (represented by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries).
Indonesia's Chair brought in its own significance considering that at the moment it is the host for the Interim Secretariat of the Coral Triangle Initiative, Coral Reef, Fishery and Food Security (CTI-CFF). Being the head of both SSME and CTI is presenting Indonesia with the opportunity to put together an integrated Coral Triangle management. In addition, as the Chair of SSME, Indonesia will host the Seventh TNC-SSME Meeting in Jakarta in July 2013.
At the current TNC-SSME meeting, a number of crucial issues were raised including establishing a sustainable SSME funding management, forging a linkage between SSME and CTI and the commitment to develop SSME's Regional Plan of Action on Shark.
To achieve a sustainable funding management, TNC-SSME agreed to establish a working group with the task of preparing project proposals for prospective donors. For that purpose, TNC-SSME has invited Deutsche Gesellschaft fűr Internationale Zusammenarbeit/ German International Cooperation for the Philippines and Pacific (GIF) as one of the prospective donors to brief them on the mechanism on project proposals. TNC-SSME also invited consultants from Starling Resources to present the result of the study on sustainable funding which would enable the funding of Bunaken National Park and the Berau Sea Conservation Region. The said study was expected to be used as a reference for SSME's member countries to develop the appropriate sustainable funding system.
At the end of the meeting, TNC-SSME agreed and accepted the Comprehensive Action Plan with Sustainable Financing Options proposed by the Philippines.
As a forum for cooperation in marine eco region management, SSME preceded the establishment of CTI-CCF, a fact that was acknowledged by the later with its recognition of SSME as one of the seascape priority. As a follow up of the recognition, TNC-SSME agreed to establish a better communication between them. Therefore, TNC-SSME is preparing a Joint Communique, which will be delivered to the CTI-CFF Interim Secretariat to be forwarded to the CTI-CFF's Seventh Senior Official Meetings (SOM7), and the Third Ministerial Meeting scheduled to take place in Jakarta from 24-28 October 2011.
With regard to the SSME Regional Plan of Action on Shark (RPoA on Shark), TNC-SSME agreed to follow it up through a discussion in the working group under the Sub-Committee on Threatened, Charismatic, and Migratory Species (SC-TCMS) headed by Indonesia. The RpoA on Shark will be developed in accordance with each country's National Plan of Action on Shark.
SSME was first established in 2004 and it was projected as a forum to share experience and best practices in managing the Sulu-Sulawesi Sea. Along the way, it has developed into a forum to synergize the management of Sulu-Sulawesi Sea, which is one of the richest marine eco regions in term of its bio diversity in the world. UK and Indonesia: 200 years of historical ties
2011 is an exciting year for the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and the UK, where 200 years of close historical ties between the two nations was first marked by the arrival of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, a British administrator and amateur scientist, in Java, Indonesia on 1811.
Raffles contributed much to the knowledge of the world then about Indonesia. He wrote a book titled ‘the History of Java’, describing the history of the island and its denizens for the Western world.
